Description

Gilt metal etui embossed and chased with Rococo decoration, containing five needlework tools

Gilt metal, embossed and chased. Shaped triangular body, oval in section, with hinged lid and sprung button clasp. Decorated with two vignettes of cherubs within scroll borders and rocaille decoration. The fitted interior contains a folding knife with a silver-gilt hallmarked blade (A), a pair of ivory memorandum leaves hinged with a gilt button (B), a pair of scissors (C), a stiletto (D) and a bodkin (E).

Note

Charles Rawlings (who registered his mark on 3 July 1817) made a replacement blade for the knife. The etui and the rest of the contents were made approximately fifty years earlier.
