Description

Copper, painted in polychrome enamels on a white ground with busts of a youth and a woman, each surrounded by flowers and foliage

Three copper plaques painted in pale and mid-blue, green, yellow, orange, pink, mauve, red, pale brown and black enamels on a white ground cover the front, spine and back of the metal bookcover, and are held in position by its scalloped edges, which also have a border of twisted gold wire, and hinges joining the back and front to the spine. The front is decorated with a bust of a youth with long brown hair, and a blue drape over a mauve tunic, surrounded by various flowers, including tulips, lilies and carnations. On the back there is a bust of a young woman wearing a blue veil over her head, surrounded by various flowers. The plaque on the spine is decorated with flowers of similar types. One gilt metal hasp is tied on by a red thread, the other is missing.
