Description

The renowned London insurers Lloyds initiated the occasional award of medals for services to the company with a Silver Medal in 1917. The piece was designed by Allan Gairdner Wyon, and bears the figure of god Neptune to symbolise Lloyds' abiding connection with shipping and the sea. It is still occasionally awarded today: the most recent awards were made in 2005, and before that in 1999. This example is a specimen from the designer's own collection. It is in bronze: the Museum also has a specimen in white-metal.
