Description

John Marshall was the name of a Professor of Surgery at University College London in the late nineteenth century, but the UCL prize of the same name is not to commemorate him but his son, who was a barrister in the Middle Temple. The prize was founded in 1927 by Marshall's sister, and is still awarded today, for an essay in philology, preference being given to essays using a comparative method between any of the languages studied at the College. The medal is awarded in silver, to this design by Allan Gairdner Wyon; this example however is a specimen from Wyon's workshop done in white metal.
