Mug made for the Coronation of Edward VIII
Factory: Crown Staffordshire Porcelain Co. Ltd.
Bone china, slip-cast, with a blue enamel ground, transfer-printed in brown and gold. Cylindrical with sloping sides, and below the the rim, a horizontal band of laurel leaves in relief; loop handle. One side is decorated with a brown portrait of the King in an oval frame with a lion standing on a crown above, and two flags on either side, titled in gold below on a ribbon 'H.M.KING EDWARD VIII' and on the ground below, CORONATION/ MAY 12 1937'. On the other side is a Crown over 'EVIII R', with below, an arrangement of shamrocks, roses and thistles. The band of laurel leaves is picked out in gold. There is a gold band round the base, another round the rim, and a thinner band inside it. The handle is gilded overall.
