Description

Buff stoneware with iron-speckled buff glaze, painted in greyish-blue and iron-brown with a stylized plant spray

Buff stoneware, thrown, with applied handle at right angles to the lip, and iron-speckled buff glaze, painted in greyish-blue and iron- brown; base and inside of rim unglazed. The pot has a wide base and tapers towards the projecting rim and lip. The tubular handle expands towards the closed and rounded end which is pierced by a hole. The cover is concave on top, with an almost flat circular knob. The front of the pot is decorated with a plant spray of two leaves flanking a tall composite flower with two blue curving stems on either side. A wide brown band encircles the rim and lip, the edge of the cover and the exterior of the knob. Originally part of a set with C.49-2007 and C.50-2007

Note

The mark is that of the Lowerdown Pottery which was run by David Andrew Leach (1911-2005) from 1956 to 2003. Jeremy Leach also worked there from 1970 to 1974 (?) and again from 1983-97/8 and from 2001.
