William Knollys, 1st Earl of Banbury
Printmaker: Robins, William (Attributed)
Method of acquisition: Given (1957) by Clarke, Louis Colville Gray
The attribution to Robins is entirely due to the inscription on the mount, as the margin of the mezzotint is blank. All twelve portraits listed in Chaloner Smith are part of a series of the Founders of Oxford and Cambridge, similar to the one produced by Faber around 1714. If this portrait is by Robins this would make William Knollys (1547-1632) the odd one out: he was educated at Magdalen college, but was not a Founder of any others.
Accession number: P.67-1957
Primary reference Number: 159760
Chaloner Smith: Not in Smith
