Gourd-shaped ewer
Pottery: Unknown
Stoneware, thrown, with parts attached, with accidental ash glaze. This ewer is of bottle-gourd shape, with a slightly curved spout, attached at the widest part of the body, a curved handle, and a small cover that echoes the shape of the ewer. The spout and the lower part of the body have been pared with a knife. The base is flat. The coarse thick clay body has fired a dark grey, it is undecorated, and covered with kiln gloss and accidental glaze from falling wood ash.

This type of ware had previously often been attributed to the 10th or 11th century, but fragments of a similar high-fired dark grey ware have been found at thirteenth-century celadon kiln sites. This ewer would have been used for wine.
