Description

Silver-gilt and coconut; rim mount engraved with an eagle, wolf and horse, coconut held by three straps, on a Mannerist stem and foot.

Silver-gilt and coconut; the slightly domed circular base embossed in the Mannerist style with putti sporting in water with sea monsters. The stem comprises a raised boss below a baluster knop, which is embossed with winged grotesques on a matted ground. The calyx is simply engraved to resemble three leaves. Three cast openwork staps contain the coconut and are secured at the top with a Classical cast head of a man. Around the top of the coconut is a broad band engraved with three circles between vignettes of an eagle, wolf and horsbirds amid foliage. The deep rim mount is plain inside, whilst the exterior is engraved with a band of strapwork. The centre of the cover is of coconut shell with a chased silver-gilt border of the heads of putti between birds and scrols. In the centre is a finial of a Classical warrior.
