Description

Bowl with cranes and clouds. Stoneware, thrown, carved and celadon-glazed. This bowl is of conical shape with a concave base. On the outside it is plain, while the inside is carved in low relief with six motifs of clouds and cranes, and a chrysanthemum floret in the centre. The pale bluish-green glaze is glossy and crackled. The base shows three quartzite spur-marks.

Note

This kind of bowl was used for tea. Low-relief motifs of this kind are frequently seen on pieces from the latter part of the twelfth century. This piece is important as it shows that the inlaid crane-and-cloud motif developed from carved low-relief motifs at this time.
