Description

Bottle. Stoneware, thrown and celadon-glazed. The neck of this mallet-shaped bottle is long and narrow, and the mouth is everted; the body has an angled sloping shoulder and straight sides. The piece is undecorated. The glaze has a pale blue-green jade colour with a subtle gloss and fine overall crackle. It is not evenly applied, and where it is very thin, the grey colour of the body shines through. The base is flat and has partly been wiped free of glaze; it has traces of fire-clay spur-marks.

Note

This shape, which is called ch'omhyonbyong (Japanese: kinuta), was probably used as a flower vase, and may have been produced at the kilns in Sadang-ri, Kangjin-gun, South Cholla province. The prototype can be found in Longquan bottles with fish-dragon or phoenix handles. On the Korean example, however, the handles are lacking and the overall proportions are different.
