Description

Ewer with peony scrolls. Stoneware, thrown, with parts attached, painted in iron-oxide, and celadon-glazed. This ewer has a tall slightly flaring neck and a rounded body, a curved spout and handle and a concave base. The loop at the top of the handle is broken and the cover is lost. It is freely painted in pale brown iron-oxide with a large peony scroll on the body and leaves on both spout and handle. The glaze is of pale greenish-brown colour, with a glossy surface and a fine crackle, and covers the whole vessel. The piece was fired standing on fine sand of which traces remain on the base.

Note

This type of ewer was made in the latter part of the eleventh century in Chinsan-ri, Haenam-gun, where fragments have been excavated. The kiln site was first located in May 1983 and more than thirty kilns have subsequently been excavated near the coast, bringing to light mostly celadons washed with iron-oxide (ch'olch'ae). In December 1984 the site was designated an 'Important Historical Site'.
