Description

Vase with foliate sprays. Stoneware, thrown, painted in iron-oxide, incised, and celadon-glazed. This maebyong-shaped vase has a short neck with projecting rim, and a rounded body which tapers towards the base. It has a low uneven footring. It is decorated with bands of stylised chrysanthemum petals round both shoulder and foot, the former painted in brown iron-oxide, the latter incised through a plain iron-oxide band; and on the body between are three sprays of peony foliage fluently painted in underglaze-brown with veins incised. The glaze has a greenish-brown tone, harmonising well with the dark iron decoration. It is glossy, has a fine crackle, and is unevenly applied. The vessel was fired on sandy spurs.
