Description

Cup and stand with chrysanthemum design. Stoneware, moulded, carved and incised, inlaid in black and white slip and celadon-glazed. The large cup is of ten-lobed floral shape, with a small flared foot. Inside, a chrysanthemum floret is incised in the lobed recessed centre and ten chrysanthemum sprays round the sides. On the outside a classic-scroll border is incised at the rim, a scalloped petal border above the foot and each lobe is again decorated with a chrysanthemum spray, this time inlaid in black and white slip. The stand has a raised support, a tray with broad lobed rim and a ten-lobed foot. The support is carved with pendant petals with incised veins and a single chrysanthemum floret is incised on the recessed centre. The tray is incised with fishes among waves around the centre and inlaid with ten chrysanthemum sprays in black and white slip on the rim. The foot has incised foliage sprays on each lobe. The brownish-green celadon glaze is evenly applied and glossy. The bases of both pieces show quartzite spur-marks.
