Description

Bowl with crane design. Stoneware, thrown, inlaid in black and white slip, and celadon-glazed. The bowl is of shallow rounded shape with slightly inturned rim, and has a small footring. The inside is inlaid with a triple chrysanthemum floret in the centre, enclosed by a youi-head border and surrounded by six cranes in flight among clouds and a classic-scroll rim border. The outside is decorated with four lotus-spray medallions within a broad scrollwork border which is inlaid in outlines only, and another classic-scroll rim border. There are no spur marks but the footring is unglazed and has fired a dark reddish brown. The potter's signature in indecipherable cursive script is impressed in the base.
