Description

Deep bowl. Porcelain, thrown and glazed. This deep bowl (sabal) has a flared mouth and a tall straight foot with a slight inward slant; the centre is recessed. The clay body is thick and the glaze has a greyish-white tone tinged with blue. The footring shows traces of fine sand from the firing support.

Note

The fifteenth-century predecessors of this type of bowl have a more strongly flared mouth and a broad but shorter foot, the glaze at that time had a bluish-white tone rather than the greyish white of this piece. This bowl may be a product of Kwanm-ri in Kwangju, which has been identified as a sixteenth-century kiln site.
