Tanji
Pottery: Unknown
Pickle jar with peony. Porcelain, thrown, painted in cobalt-blue and glazed. This pickle jar, or tanji, has a wide, slightly everted neck, a globular body and a short foot. Around the shoulder is a youi-head border and the main area of the body is painted in bright cobalt-blue with two peony sprays in full bloom. Both neck and foot are encircled by blue lines. The footring is deep and shows traces of fine sand from the firing support. The body is thick and the piece is covered with a pale bluish-white glaze. This piece was inscribed after firing; the inscription, engraved in dots above the foot reads musin sa nyoon kogan tae tyung syo idyuk, which may be translated as "made in the fourth year, musin for storage, [in] large, medium and small [sizes]". The cyclical year musin recorded in the inscription corresponds here probably to the year 1868.
