Description

Bottle with bamboo and prunus design. Porcelain, thrown, with designs applied and incised, and glazed. This bottle is pear-shaped, with a broad base and a tapering neck. The decoration is applied in shallow relief with incised details and consists of alternating sprays of prunus and stems of bamboo. The glaze is of pale bluish-white tone. Both the base and the footring are covered with fine sand from the firing support. A spiralling line is incised on the base.

Note

The vessel was most probably made at Punwon-ri. It is possible that such monochrome decoration techniques were developed because of the chronic scarcity of cobalt in Korea.
