Description

Stem cup with long-life inscription. Porcelain, thrown, inscribed in slip and glazed. The deep cup is set on a tall flared foot that is closed with a slightly concave base. Four characters are inscribed in slip around the sides, reading yonnyon iksu ('prolonging of years and increase of longevity'). The bluish-white glaze is thickly applied but clear and fine. The vessel was fired on fire-clay supports.

Note

This vessel would have served as a wine cup conveying good wishes. It would originally have been accompanied by a matching stand similar to a set from the Tongwon collection in the Seoul National Museum.
