Note

Same subject (but composition and verses different) as that of the frontispiece to "Eikon Alethine" (1649) (Truthful Image) which as an anonymous response to Charles book "Eikon Basilike" (The King's Book). This book was written in the king's voice and was a defense of Charles' actions in the civil war, and comparisons of the king with Old Testament patriarchs. There was great controversy over authorship, as the book was believed to have been written by John Gauden - a political and religious writer. The Latin spoken by the Fool is a famous rhetorical question from Horace's De Arte Poetica
