Description

Gold, the oval bezel set with a chalcedony intaglio head of a woman in profile to the left, possibly the young Catherine the Great, signed 'PICHLER.F.'. The hoop divides into two on each side of the deep-sided, open-backed bezel.

Note

Catherine the Great was born in 1729 and ruled from 1762

Dr Forbes looked at the gem before accession. He described it as 'Chalcedony (v. inclusions of 'mossy' from behind neck). Colour probably artificial: either stained or heat-treated.'
