Hard-paste porcelain, painted in polychrome enamels, and gilt

Hard-paste porcelain, moulded, and painted overglaze in pale greyish-blue, blue, green, yellow, flesh-pink, pale pink, red, pale mauve, purple, reddish-brown, grey and black enamels, and gilt. The recessed, closed underside has a short-armed cross-shaped support in the middle, and is glazed overall. A large circular suspension hole is situated in the viewer's back right quarter.
The shallow rectangular base has white sides, and is almost entirely covered by a pale greyish-blue rug with a darker blue and yellow fringe. The man is seated on a pale yellow stool with rococo style scrolled legs and stretchers, and seat upholstered in fabric with a red stylized flowerhead pattern. He leans on his left elbow which rests on a small circular table with a central leg and three scroll feet. A tea bowl stands on the table. His head is turned to the viewer’s left, and his legs are stretched out in front of him in that direction with his left foot crossed over his right. He holds his right hand up at chest level. His long grey hair is tied back with a purple ribbon. He wears a white shirt with ruffles on the front opening and cuffs, a pale mauve night gown with green and purple stripes, a pink lining, and a gold edges, black breeches with gold knee band and buttons, white stockings and black shoes with gold buckles.
