Clockmaker: Chater, James
Bracket clock with break-arch dial plate; 8 day movement, rack striking.
Dial: Break-arch brass dial plate, 8 inches wide with plain centre which should be silvered. Spandrels consisting of a female head and drapery amidst scrolling foliage with matching spandrels in the arch. Silvered chapter ring without quarter hour divisions and silvered ring in arch engraved ‘James Chater/London' and ‘Strike/Silent'. Modern blued steel hands of serpentine design.
Movement: 8 day movement, rack striking, with original verge escapement and engraved fixing brackets. Replaced apron piece to back cock. Exceptional, plain back plate, suggesting that it was originally hidden by a silk-backed fret in the back door.
Case: Inverted bell-topped case, green japanning with fine gilt lattice design and reserves painted in natural colours with a mixture of Oriental and European figures. Fine quality decoration in un-restored condition. Fine quality gilt wood frets in side openings and spandrels of front door. Glass in back door almost certainly replacing a similar wooden fret, see under Movement. Original top handle and four finials in brass. Later, but still 18th cen¬tury, side handles fitted over painted reserves.
