Description

Table clock with 8 day circular movement. Late Louis XV design representing the rape of Europa. Drum supported on the back of a bull led by Europe and followed by Cupid, standing on an elaborately scrolled base

Dial: One piece white enamel dial with black markings, roman numerals for the hours and arabic ones for every five minutes. Elaborately pierced and shaped gilt brass hands. Signed in the dial centre ‘JOLLY A PARIS'.

Movement: 8 day circular movement striking hours and half hours on a bell. The original silk suspension for the pendulum replaced with a Brocot type adjustable spring suspension on a new back cock.

Case: Of late Louis XV design and representing the Rape of Europa. The almost symmetrical rococo ormolu base carries two ormolu figures, Cupid and attendant maid or nymph, and the bronze bull. The latter carries the restrained rococo ormolu clock surround which is surmounted by the figure of Europa. As the whole case is of very fine quality, although it is not signed, it could perhaps be attributed to Saint-Germain.
