Note

Text from object entry in A. Game (2016) ‘Contemporary British Crafts: The Goodison Gift to the Fitzwilliam Museum’. London: Philip Wilson Publishers: David Reekie studied at Stourbridge College of Art between 1967 and 1970, at a time of great creative experiment under tutors such as the sculptor Harry Seager (b.1931). He established his first studio in Lincoln in 1975, and taught in the Glass department at North Staffordshire Polytechnic. In 1986, he moved to full-time glassmaking in a new studio in Norfolk. His brilliant satirical eye has resulted in a body of sculpture in glass that has been exhibited and collected all over the world with work represented in some twenty museum collections internationally. Over the past thirty years, Reekie has also lectured and given workshops at, amongst others, the Royal College of Art, London; Pilchuck Glass School in the USA; Tokyo Glass Institute; Sars-Poteries, France; the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and Art Glass Studios in Perth, Australia. In 2011 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Wolverhampton University. All of David Reekie’s work explores different narratives of what it means to be human. David Reekie: ‘We live in a world that grows more complex and difficult to comprehend. It has tensions and temptations that pull us in different directions. This creates characters and situations that provide a constant source of material from which I take my ideas. This piece carries on the theme of relationships between people started with the series Different People and Envy of Others. With this piece the relationship is less confrontational and is more about the sympathy we can often find in a relationship no matter how tenuous!’
