Description

Silver wine taster with applied, punched and engraved decoration, set with a portrait medallion

Silver wine taster with applied, punched and engraved decoration, set with a portrait medallion. Shallow circular bowl with curved sides and loop handle; the base of the bowl set with a portrait medallion of Louis XVI. Inside the bowl is a punched border of ovals, pellets and fleur-de-lis. On the base is a rope edged border which acts as a foot; above this, on the side opposite the handle, is an applied vine and grapes with an animal, possibly a fox, stretching into the branches. The loop handle has a border of two deeply incised lines, and a fleur-de-lis applied to the top. The legends on the medallion are: on the obverse ‘LUD. XVI REX CHRISTIANISS’, and signature ‘B. DU VIVIER’; and on the reverse, which depicts Marie Antoinette, ‘MARIA ANT. AUSTR. FR. ET NAV. REGINA’. The rim, to the right of the handle, is inscribed ‘M.A. DESHAURAYES 1782’.
