Book of Hours
Artist: Master of the Beinecke Hours
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii paper flyleaves + ii contemporary parchment flyleaves + 169 fols. + ii paper flyleaves, 117 x 83 (67 x 47) mm, 13 long lines, ruled in brown ink, catchwords.
BINDING: 18th century, red leather over pasteboards, gold-tooled edge design, four silver corner-pieces and central monogram AM with coronet on each cover, edges gilt and gauffered.
CONTENTS: fols. 2r – 17r Calendar; fols. 18v – 113v Hours of the Virgin; fols. 113v – 116v Mass of the Virgin; fols. 117v – 148v Penitential Psalms and Litany
fols. 149r – 160r Litany of the Virgin.
DECORATION: Full-page framed miniature with three isolated flowers on plain parchment border: fol. 1v blank shield suspended from tree and supported by two angels.
Two full-page miniatures with arched frames and full strewn-flower borders including animals, birds, and grotesques on brushed gold grounds:
fol. 18v Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 117v Penitential Psalms, Last Judgement.
ORNAMENTATION: Acanthus initials [3 – 7 ll.] in liquid gold on pink grounds at major text divisions, with full borders identical to those for the miniatures, except two which display vases, gems and devotional objects (Prime, fol. 52v, and None, fol. 68r); grey initials [1 – 2 ll.] with white foliate motifs on red grounds with liquid gold designs for lesser text divisions; bar linefillers with foliate motifs in the same colour scheme.
History note: Richard, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745 – 1816), acquired in 1809; his bequest, 1816.
