PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern parchment flyleaves + 150 fols. + ii modern parchment flyleaves, 176 x 126 (101 x 65) mm, 20 long lines, ruled in pink ink, leaves lost before fols. 13 and 94.
BINDING: 19th century, black velvet over wooden boards, four silver corner pieces on each cover, two silver clasps closing back to front, top one has initials IN, edges gilt and gauffered.
CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 10v Calendar; fols. 13r – 56r Hours of the Virgin; fols. 62r – 69v Hours of the Cross; fols. 70r – 86v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 87r – 91v St Ambrose, Prayer to the Sacrament; fols. 94r – 118v Office of the Dead
fols. 120r – 141r Hours of the Holy Spirit; fols. 143r – 147r Suffrages.
DECORATION: Three full-page framed miniatures with full strewn-flower borders on brushed gold grounds including birds, animals and hunting scenes (fol. 142v) at major text divisions: fol. 61v Hours of the Cross, Crucifixion, with Virgin supported by St John, blind Longinus, centurion, and St Mary Magdalene embracing Cross; fol. 119v Hours of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost; fol. 142v Suffrage to the Trinity, Not Gottes Trinity, with Christ standing on globe and two angels holding white lilies and sword.
Nine historiated initials formed of gold acanthus on red or blue grounds with full or three-sided acanthus, strewn-flower or compartmentalised borders on brushed gold or multi-coloured grounds including animals, birds, and scenes (fol. 13r): fol. 13r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, [H, 11 ll.] St Peter Martyr with wounded head, dagger in breast, and open book, in border boar hunting outside castle; fol. 22r Lauds, [G, 7 ll.] Visitation; fol. 31r Prime, [G, 7 ll.] Adoration of the Child, in border man with sword and woman with flower; fol. 35v Terce, [G, 6 ll.] Circumcision; fol. 51r Compline, [B, 7 ll.] Flight into Egypt; fol. 62r [H, 10 ll.] Dominican saint with book, naked man with half-red and half-white body kneeling before him, in border children on hobby-horses and at waterside; fol. 70r Penitential Psalms, [H, 10 ll.] St Dominic holding Crucifix and open book, trampling over devil, and accompanied by dog holding torch, in border mermaid fighting sea knight; fol. 94r Office of the Dead, [I, 9 ll.] St Catherine of Siena, crown at feet and Tau-cross in hand, displaying stigmata, in border couple and boys snaring birds; fol. 120r Hours of the Holy Spirit, [H, 8 ll.] head of Christ in glory; fol. 143r Suffrages, [O, 9 ll.] Christ holding orb and blessing, man angling in border.
ORNAMENTATION: Gold acanthus initials [5 – 6 ll.] on pink and blue grounds with three-sided strewn-flower borders on brushed gold, including men with scrolls inscribed ‘mieals mun’ and ‘tescez mogh’ (fols. 64v, 129r); gold initials [1 – 3 ll.] on blue or pink grounds; pink and blue line fillers with liquid gold tendrils; capitals highlighted in red.
