Martyrology
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Paper (watermark cf. Briquet no. 12732), i paper flyleaf + 113 fols. + x paper flyleaves, 278 x 210 (205 – 214 x 136) mm, 24 – 30 long lines, ruled in ink or crayon, quire and leaf signatures.
BINDING: 17th century, limp parchment, remains of two ties, pink and cream endbands.
CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 113r Martyrology.
ORNAMENTATION: Red initials [2 ll.] with faces, fish, and geometric motifs (IHS monogram, fol. 1r), sometimes with internally-voided decoration, and with minor flourishing and yellow or blue highlighting for most feasts (fols. 1r – 41v); red or blue penwork initials [1 – 2 ll.] with occasional minor flourishing of descenders for feasts (fols. 42r – 113r) and lesser text divisions throughout; red penwork paragraph signs; red penwork linefillers, occasionally highlighted with yellow; minor cadels, often with faces, abstract designs and yellow highlights (mainly fols. 1r – 41v).
History note: Jules Chifflet (c.1610 – 1676), Chancellor of the Order of the Golden Fleece, who purchased it in Brussels in 1639 (ownership inscription, fol. 113v); Thomas Kerrich, acquired in 1827; his bequest, 1828.
