Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii parchment flyleaves + 132 fols. + ii parchment flyleaves, 183 x 132 (115 x 79) mm, 17 long lines, ruled in red ink, one leaf lost after fol. 129.

BINDING: seventeenth century, brown leather with interlaced patterns in white, black, blue and green over pasteboards, sewn on 5 supports, edges gilt; spine and corners repaired by S. Cockerell in 1980.

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 12v Calendar; fols. 14r – 19v Hours of the Cross; fols. 21r – 24v Hours of the Holy Spirit; fols. 26r – 34v Mass of the Virgin; fols. 36r – 39r Obsecro te; fols. 39r – 40v O intemerata; fols. 42r – 90v Hours of the Virgin
fols. 92r – 106v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 108r – 129v Office of the Dead (ends imperfectly).

DECORATION: Fourteen full-page framed miniatures with full floral and acanthus borders on plain parchment grounds including animals, birds, grotesques, and human figures at major text divisions: fol. 13v Hours of the Cross, Crucifixion with Virgin supported by St John, Longinus piercing Christ’s side, and soldiers; fol. 20v Hours of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost; fol. 25v Mass of the Virgin, Virgin and Child seated, with angels; fol. 35v Obsecro te, Virgin and Child standing, with angels; fol. 41v Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 51v Lauds, Visitation; fol. 61v Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 66v Terce, Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 71v Sext, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 75v None, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 79v Vespers, Massacre of the Innocents; fol. 86v Compline, Flight into Egypt; fol. 91v Penitential Psalms, Last Judgement; fol. 107v Office of the Dead, Raising of Lazarus.

ORNAMENTATION: Blue or dark pink white-patterned initials [5 ll.] with foliage infill on gold grounds, three-sided bar borders, and full acanthus, floral, and spraywork borders not matching those on the facing miniature pages at major text divisions; gold initials [2 – 4 ll.] on dark pink or blue white-patterned grounds; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with black or red pen-flourishing; gold and bluegeometric linefillers in Litany; capitals highlighted in yellow.
