PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern paper flyleaves + 113 fols. + iii modern paper flyleaves, 194 x 132 (128 x 79) mm, 23 long lines, ruled in pink and red ink, one leaf lost between fols. 74 – 75, pricking above the miniatures suggests that they were protected by curtains.

BINDING: 19th century, gold-tooled red leather over pasteboards.

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 6v Calendar; fols. 8r – 11v Hours of the Cross; fols. 13r – 16v Hours of the Holy Spirit; fols. 18r – 20v Mass of the Virgin; fols. 21r – 23v Gospel Sequences; fols. 24r – 25v O intemerata; fols. 29r – 66r Hours of the Virgin; fols. 67r – 67v Salutation to the Virgin; fols. 69r – 73v Office of the Virgin in Advent; fols. 75r – 77v Suffrages (begin imperfectly); fols. 79r – 89r Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 91r –112v Office of the Dead.

DECORATION: Fourteen full-page framed miniatures with full acanthus and floral borders (inner borders without leaves or flowers) at major text divisions:
fol. 7v Hours of the Cross, Crucifixion with Virgin, St John, soldier and Jews; fol. 12v Hours of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost; fol. 17v Mass of the Virgin, Virgin and Child between two angels; fol. 28v Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 39v Lauds, Visitation; fol. 46v Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 49v Terce, Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 52v Sext, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 55v None, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 58v Vespers, Massacre of the Innocents; fol. 63v Compline, Flight into Egypt; fol. 68v Office of the Virgin in Advent, Coronation of the Virgin; fol. 78v Penitential Psalms, Last Judgement with Virgin and St John interceding; fol. 90v Office of the Dead, Funeral service.

ORNAMENTATION: Pink or blue white-patterned initials [5 – 6 ll.] with foliage infill on gold grounds and full borders matching and facing those of the miniatures at the main text divisions; gold initials [2 – 4 ll.] on blue or pink white-patterned grounds; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with black or red pen-flourishing; blue and pink geometric linefillers with gold balls in Litany; capitals highlighted in yellow.

History note: Hubertus Petit Billionensis (ownership inscriptions, fols. 45v, 66v); Richard, seventh viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745 – 1816), acquired in 1812; his bequest, 1816.
