PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii paper flyleaves + i parchment flyleaf + 151 fols. + ii parchment flyleaves + ii paper flyleaves, 183 x 134 (110 x 74) mm, 17 long lines, ruled in pink ink, partly erased catchwords.

BINDING: 19th century, red velvet over pasteboard.

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 12v Calendar in French; fols. 13r – 20v Hours of the Cross; fols. 21r – 23v Hours of the Holy Spirit; fols. 24r – 28v Gospel Sequences of St John and St Luke; fols. 30r – 81r Hours of the Virgin; fols. 81r – 98v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 99r – 146r Office of the Dead; fols. 146r – 151r Prayers and Suffrages.

DECORATION: Nineteen large miniatures with arched frames and full acanthus and floral borders at major text divisions: fol. 13r Hours of the Cross, Matins, Agony in the Garden, with soldiers outside garden fence; fol. 14v Prime, Christ before Pilate; fol. 15v Terce, Carrying of the Cross; fol. 16v Sext, Crucifixion with two thieves, Virgin and St John; fol. 17v None, Crucifixion with Virgin, St John, and skull beneath Cross; fol. 18v Vespers, Deposition; fol. 19v Compline, Entombment with Three Women, St John, and apostle; fol. 21r Hours of the Holy Spirit, Pentecost; fol. 30r Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 40r Lauds, Visitation; fol. 51r Prime, Adoration of the Child; fol. 57r Terce, Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 61r Sext, Massacre of the Innocents; fol. 66r None, Adoration of the Magi; fol. 70r Vespers, Flight into Egypt; fol. 77r Compline, Presentation in the Temple; fol. 82r Penitential Psalms, David penitent; fol. 99r Office of the Dead, Funeral service; fol. 107r Raising of Lazarus.

ORNAMENTATION: Blue or pink white-patterned initials [4 ll.] with foliage infill on gold grounds beneath miniatures at major text divisions; gold initials [2 ll.] on blue and pink grounds with partial acanthus and ivy leaf borders; gold one-line initials on blue and red grounds; red and pink line-fillers with gold and white ornament; capitals highlighted in red.

Notes

History note: Charles, Duc d’Aremberg who added family events for the period 1568 – 1595 to the Calendar, including his wedding to Anne de Croy, the birth of a son in Bruges, and a baptismal ceremony of a daughter at St Gudule Cathedral in Brussels; Richard, seventh viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745 – 1816), acquired in 1810; his bequest, 1816.
