Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Paper (watermarks not visible), i contemporary paper flyleaf + 357 fols. + i contemporary paper flyleaf , 204 x 140 (140 x 100) mm, 2 columns, 29 lines, ruled in plummet.

BINDING: First half of sixteenth century, brown leather over cushioned oak boards, sewn on four double supports, blind-stamped central panel and edge design, remains of two leather straps on lower cover, two catchplates on upper cover, parchment tabs with pink and cream thread knots.

ORNAMENTATION: Acanthus and foliage initials [10 – 21 ll.] in blue, green, red, pink, brown and yellow, with silver highlights and full or partial borders with foliate and geometric motifs, busts of jesters (fol. 167v), monstrance (fol. 26r, Hours of the Holy Sacrament), and occasional scrolls with devotional inscriptions, for main text divisions; blue or red penwork initials [7 – 11 ll.] with reserved ornament and pink foliate pen-flourished infill and extensions, occasionally on yellow, green or silver grounds, for lesser text divisions; alternate red and blue penwork initials [1 – 3 ll.] with occasional pink pen-flourishing.

Notes

History note: ‘s(uster) Frederik van Oerd’ who was 90 in 1640 and had professed at the age of 27 (inscription in Dutch dated 1640, fol. i verso); bequeathed by her to Brother Hendrik van Dieren (near Arnhem) on 6 Sept. 1675 in Arnhem (inscription in Dutch dated 1675, fol. 1r); Canons Regular of the Monastery of the Virgin Mary, Gaesdonck, near Goch (inscription ‘Gaesdonck 1701’, fol. 1r); confiscated by the French during the Revolution (stamp of the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, c.1800 on fols. 1r, 357v); cutting from unidentified English bookseller’s catalogue with no. 378 pasted on fol. i; purchased for the Museum in 1891.
