PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 66 fols., 308 x 220 (190 x 131) mm, 35 long lines, ruled in red ink, running headers (fols. 6r – 29r), catchwords.

BINDING: Sixteenth century, red velvet over wooden boards, sewn on 5 supports, 5 brass bosses on each cover, two metal clasps on lower cover, two metal catchplates on upper cover, horn covered fenestra on upper cover with the titles of the two treatises written on parchment piece.

CONTENTS: fols. 5r – 29r Guillebert or Hugues de Lannoy, L’instruction d’un jeune Prince with capitula and Prologue; fols. 30r – 64r René d’Anjou, Le mortifiement de vaine plaisance.

DECORATION: Half-page framed miniature with full acanthus and floral border on plain parchment ground including gold monogram and arms of the Luxembourg family: fol. 10v Author presenting book to enthroned patron

Nine half-page framed miniatures: fol. 31r Soul personified as winged, naked woman, holding Heart, and sitting beside stream; fol. 34v Soul conversing with Crainte and Contrition; fol. 41r Soul showing Heart to Crainte and Contrition; fol. 46r lady in a cart drawn by two horses, one blindfolded; fol. 48v women carrying sacks of grain across bridge to a watermill; fol. 51v knight attacking fortress; fol. 54v Soul offering Heart to Crainte, Contrition looking on; fol. 59v Crainte, Foy, Vraye Amour and Grace nailing Heart to cross; fol. 61v Soul kneeling and holding cross with Heart on it, Crainte and Contricion attending.

ORNAMENTATION: fols. 5r – 29r: Gold initials [4 – 6 ll.] with acanthus ornament and infill on blue and pink grounds, and partial acanthus and floral borders containing gold monogram (fols. 6r, 11r, 13v, 15r, 16v, 18r, 20r, 22v); identical gold initials [2 ll.] on blue and pink grounds; capitals highlighted in yellow. fols. 30r – 64r: Gold initials [4 ll.] of the same type as on fols. 5r – 29r, but by different hand and of inferior quality (fols. 30r, 31r, 34v, 41r, 46r, 48v, 49v, 51v, 54v, 59v, 61v); identical gold initials [2 ll.] and plain gold initials [2 ll.] on blue and pink white-patterned grounds; capitals highlighted in yellow.

History note: Pierre de Luxembourg (c.1440 – 1482) (arms on fol. 10v and gold monogram in first part of manuscript); 16th and 17th century inscriptions inside upper cover and fol. 1r: ‘Froment 1558’, ‘SANS VOUS NE PUIS BOVRGNE’, note of death of Madame de Froment, 1605; Hermann de Bourgougne (1570 – 1626), Count of Falais-sur-Méhaigne (ownership inscription and anagram headed in the same hand ‘Fallaix 1597 25 Aprilis’ inside upper cover, family notes for period 1593 – 1607 on fols. 4r – 4v); Richard, seventh viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (1745 – 1816), acquired in 1814; his bequest, 1816.
