Oberbayerisches Landrecht

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, vii contemporary parchment leaves (fol. i former pastedown) + 58 fols. (contemporary foliation in red ink followed in this description) + i contemporary parchment flyleaf (former pastedown) , 315 x 220 (215 x 125) mm, 30 – 31 long lines, ruled in brown ink.
BINDING: 15th century, c.1478 (watermarks on pastedowns Briquet no. 14606, Bavaria 1478), brown leather over wooden boards, sewn on 4 double supports, 1 brass plate in centre of each cover, 4 brass cornerpieces on each cover inscribed O mater dei misereri m, two brass clasps on lower cover, two brass catchplates on upper cover

DECORATION: Historiated initial [W, 14 ll.] on gold ground with foliate border containing coats of arms (anti-clockwise) of Pfalz, the Empire, Brandenburg, Holland, and Bavaria:
fol. vii verso Emperor Ludwig of Bavaria standing on lions, flanked by eagles and courtiers. Spaces left blank for miniatures above each titulus.
ORNAMENTATION: Red penwork initials [2 ll.] for each section.
History note: Nicolaus Winzurn of Constance, 1538 (ownership inscription on fol. i verso); Hieronymus Wilhelm Ebner von Eschenbach (1673 – 1752) of Nüremberg, his MS A. 1346 (note pencilled inside lower cover); sold in the sales of his library which took place in Nüremberg from 1813 until 1820, although according to the pencil note the manuscript was sold in 1816, it is no. 164 in the first volume of the sale catalogue (Ranner 1812 – 1819), which was published in 1812 and relates to the first sale, 2 Aug. 1813; purchased for the Museum in 1893.
