Twelve Miniatures from Hours

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, miniatures and borders cut out of original manuscript and pasted on modern parchment leaves interleaved with unfoliated pink paper leaves, miniatures c.75 x 60 mm, borders c.145 x 95 mm.
BINDING: Nineteenth century, black paper over pasteboards
DECORATION: Twelve large framed miniatures surrounded by strewn-flower borders on brushed gold grounds: fol. 1r Annunciation; fol. 2r Visitation; fol. 3r Adoration of the Child; fol. 4r Annunciation to the Shepherds; fol. 5r Adoration of the Magi; fol. 6r Presentation in the Temple; fol. 7r Flight into Egypt; fol. 8r Crucifixion with Virgin, St John, St Mary Magdalene and two Holy Women; fol. 9r Pentecost; fol. 10r David penitent, angel with three arrows above; fol. 11r Raising of Lazarus; fol. 12r Donors’ couple and St Adrian holding sword witnessing St Francis receiving the stigmata.
History note: John Boykett Jarman (d.1864); his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 13 – 14 June 1864, lot 127 or 145; Edward Hailstone; purchased for the Museum at his sale, Sotheby’s, London, 4 Feb. 1891, lot unidentified.
