Ornatus Muliebris Anglicanus or the Severall Habits of the English Women from the Nobili.tie to the country Woman, as they are in these times, Ornatus Muliebris Anglicanus
Printmaker:
Hollar, Wenceslaus
Publisher:
Overton, John
From a numbered set of 26 full-length figures of gentlewomen, with a title page. This set comprises 17 plates (including the title page) printed on eight sheets. So far as can be seen, bearing in mind the set is not complete, the plates have been printed in order, with the exception of the sixth sheet (which has three plates instead of two): plate nos. 18, 19 & 26. The latter is not a numbered impression, which might explain why it is out of sequence. The sheets have two small holes at the centre of the left-hand edge, where they were once bound together. The pages are watermarked with a 'Pro Patria' and the initials JV (the maker Jean Villedary? This would be consistent with dates Overton owned the plates, ca.1665-1700).
History note: Possibly given by Sir Herbert Thompson in 1920. The set was contained within an envelope of prints given by Thompson, but all of the others are annotated with this information, so it is possible that the Hollar prints do not come from the same source.
