PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii paper flyleaves + i modern parchment flyleaf + 140 fols. + i modern parchment flyleaf + ii paper flyleaves, 195 x 137 (103 x 70) mm, 21 long lines, ruled in brown ink

BINDING: Nineteenth century, dark red velvet over wooden boards, two clasps on lower cover, two catchplates on upper cover, edges gilt

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 12r Calendar; fols. 12v – 42r Hours of the Virgin; fols. 42v – 60v Hours of the Eternal Wisdom; fols. 61r – 81r Hours of the Holy Spirit
fols. 81v – 100v Hours of the Cross; fols. 101r – 112v Penitential Psalms and Litany; fols. 113r – 140v Office of the Dead.

ORNAMENTATION: Blue initials [3 – 11 ll.] with shaded foliate ornament and floral infill on gold grounds, three- or one-sided gold, blue and pink bar borders, and full or partial acanthus and spraywork borders including birds, grotesques and occasional human figures; gold initials [2 – 4 ll.] on blue and pink white-patterned grounds, with spraywork extensions and occasionally with three-sided borders; alternate red and blue penwork one-line initials; gold, blue and red geometric and foliate linefillers.

History note: Purchased by Dr Geikie of Ayr at an unidentified Sotheby’s sle; Sotheby’s, London, 17 July 1950, lot 18; purchased by Francis Edwards; purchased from him by Thomas Sidney Blakeney (1905 – 1976) in 1954; his gift, October 1955.
