BINDING: 18th century, faded pink velvet over pasteboard, two silver-gilt clasps on lower cover, two silver-gilt catchplates on upper cover, all four with cherub’s head, edges gilt.

DECORATION: Five full-page framed miniatures (fols. 1v, 41v, 45v, 52v, 78v), ten large framed miniatures (fols. 19v, 34r, 36r, 38v, 43v, 48r, 50r, 55r, 56v, 59v), and one small framed miniature (fol. 26r), with full strewn-flower borders including animals, birds, insects or putti on brushed gold grounds: fol. 1v St Francis receiving stigmata; fol. 19v Patron with open book and rosary kneeling behind priest who celebrates Mass at altar with Crucifixion triptych, acolyte at his side, with a view of a street probably in Augsburg; fol. 26r St John the Evangelist with cup and serpent; fol. 34r Virgin and Child clothed in Sun, standing on Crescent Moon, and crowned by two angels; fol. 36r St Anne with Virgin and Child, flanked by two angels, dove of the Holy Spirit above; fol. 38v St Elizabeth giving alms; fol. 41v Guardian Angel approaching patron who kneels in stall with open book showing this manuscript opening; fol. 43v Christ with Twelve Apostles; fol. 45v St Christopher carrying Christ Child; fol. 48r Martyrdom of St Barbara; fol. 50r Adoration of the Magi; fol. 52v Martyrdom of St Erasmus; fol. 55r Martyrdom of St Dorothy, with Christ Child carrying basket of flowers and Theophilus in distance; fol. 56v Holy Trinity with Saints; fol. 59v Angels rescuing souls from Purgatory; fol. 78v Nativity.

ORNAMENTATION: Acanthus initials [1 – 7 ll.] highlighted in gold (that on fol. 2r enclosing liquid gold and silver drawing of St Francis receiving stigmata), on blue, green, pink or purple grounds, with full or partial architectural (fol. 54v) or strewn-flower borders on brushed gold grounds including animals, birds, insects and a scene with man chasing birds away from vineyard (fol. 20r).

History note: Copied in 1514 for female patron (dated in colophon on fol. 81r, feminine endings in prayers); female owner with initials ‘R.R.’ (added prayers with female endings on fols. 23r, 45r); illuminated c.1520 for patron depicted on fols. 19v, 41v; label with no. ‘1900’ inside upper cover; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
