Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 420 x 223 mm, part of 9 lines of text , double vertical lines ruled in black ink, part of 8 four-line music staves ruled in red.

CONTENTS: Fragmentary text of Invitatory for Matins, Antiphons for the first Nocturn, and Responsory for the first lesson of the feast of St Dominic (4 Aug.), M(undum vocans ad agni nuptias), including part of an antiphon for St Dominic on the reverse.

DECORATION: Historiated initial: [M, 3 ll.] in gold with violet and green pen-flourished infill and extensions for the first lesson of the feast of St Dominic:
Standing Christ as Man of Sorrows with four Dominican friars and layman kneeling in prayer with arms of Tucher.

ORNAMENTATION: Alternate red and blue one-line penwork initials with purple or red pen-flourishing.

Notes

History note: Probably commissioned by a member of the Tucher family of Nuremberg for a Dominican convent; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
