Miniature from a Missal
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 285 x 203 mm, inscription added on reverse.
CONTENTS: Inscription on reverse: Anno domini Millesimo quadringentesimo nonagesimo in die Circumcisionis domini Venerabilis in Christo pater, dominus Christianus Lotritsch olym Secretarius et Cappellanus Reverendi in Christo patris et domini, domini Martini Episcopi Petinensis et Cappelanus Altaris Sancti Georgii in Krainberg obtulit hunc librum missarum secundum Rubriccium Aquilegiensem pro remedio anime sue et omnium parentum suorom. Ita ut perpetuis temporibus futuris post mortem suam fit memoria publica et oratio in pronuntiatione Registri mortuorum in dicta ecclesia parochiali Kr. et In honorem sanctorum Canty, Cantiani, Cantianille et Prothi martyrum patronorum supradicte ecclesie Kr.
DECORATION: Full-page framed miniature: Crucifixion with the Virgin, two holy women, St John, and horsemen set in a landscape with a distant view of a city, corner medallions with prophets holding scrolls inscribed ‘Mathias’ (for Micah), ‘Zacharias’, ‘Isaias der proph.’, and ‘iopp der propheta’ (Job), and four frame medallions containing Evangelists’ symbols with their names inscribed on scrolls.
History note: The miniature was part of a Missal of the Use of Aquileia presented by Christian Lotritsch in 1490 to the church in Krainberg in the former Austrian duchy of Carniola (now Kranj in Slovenia), which was in the archdiocese of Aquileia; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
