Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment pasted on thin wooden panel, 307 x 208 mm.

DECORATION: Full-page framed miniature showing Anton Kress kneeling at an altar and presented by St Lawrence, floral border with the arms and crest of the Kress von Kressenstein family within a wreath held by two griffins, inscription on tablet in left border: Delicta iuventutis mee et ignorancias meas ne memin[e]ris Domine. The miniature is pasted on a thin wooden panel painted with the arms of the Kress von Kressenstein family and inscribed: Antonius Kress I[uris] V[triusque] D[octor] Canonicus Ratisp[onensis] et Praepositus D[ivi] Laurentij in Nurmberg obijt 1513 Aet[atis] S[ue] 35.

Notes

History note: Anton Kress (1478 – 1513); formerly in a gilded wooden frame with a label of W. & P. Evans, picture frame makers, 37 Beak Street, Regent Street, London, a small label with printed no. 23, a cutting from an unidentified sale catalogue with the no. 262 pasted on the back and describing an earlier ‘frame painted with coat-of-arms, inscription, and date 1617’, which is no longer -extant; Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
