Miniature with saints
Artist: Master of the Lübeck Bible and associates
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 230 x 157 mm, reverse side blank.
DECORATION: Full-page miniature of saints with the Spanish forms of their names inscribed in the upper and lower margins: Four Apostles beneath arches within a forest landscape: St Simon inscribed S. XIMON with book and saw-edged knife, St Jude inscribed S.TADEO with book and walking stick, St Barnabas inscribed S. BERNABE with book and spear, St Thomas inscribed S. THOME with book and carpenter’s square.
History note: Probably part of the collections of Abatte Luigi Celotti (c.1768 – c.1846) and/or Samuel Rogers (1763 – 1855); cuttings from unidentified English sale catalogue with lot numbers 39 – 42 pasted on old mounts; Thomas Miller Whitehead (his initials and comments on old mounts); Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
