Miniature with saints
Artist: Master of the Lübeck Bible and associates
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 230 x 160 mm, reverse side blank.
DECORATION: Full-page miniature of saints with the Spanish forms of their names inscribed in the upper and lower margins: Four Apostles within windows which reveal landscape views behind and form part of an architectural framework that includes statues of Adam and Eve, two putti holding a garland, and four grisaille roundels showing the martyrdoms of Saints Bartholomew, Philip and Andrew, and the Conversion of St Paul: St Bartholomew inscribed S. BARTHOLOME with book and flayer’s knife, St Philip inscribed S. FELIPE with book, scroll and cross, St Andrew (or St Peter) inscribed S. ANDRES with book, saltire cross and key, St Paul inscribed S. PABLO with book and sword.
History note: Probably part of the collections of Abatte Luigi Celotti (c.1768 – c.1846) and/or Samuel Rogers (1763 – 1855); cuttings from unidentified English sale catalogue with lot numbers 39 – 42 pasted on old mounts; Thomas Miller Whitehead (his initials and comments on old mounts); Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
