Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 225 x 153 mm, reverse side blank.

DECORATION: Full-page miniature of saints with the Spanish forms of their names inscribed in the upper and lower margins: Four female saints within landscape compartments defined by the cordelier that extends from a central ornament into the illusionistic borders studded with jewels and precious stones: St Catherine inscribed S. CATALINA with broken wheel and sword, St Clare inscribed S. CLARA with crosier and monstrance, St Agnes inscribed S. INES with open book and lamb, St Barbara inscribed S. BARBARA with open book, martyr’s palm, and tower behind her.

Notes

History note: Probably part of the collections of Abatte Luigi Celotti (c.1768 – c.1846) and/or Samuel Rogers (1763 – 1855); cuttings from unidentified English sale catalogue with lot numbers 39 – 42 pasted on old mounts; Thomas Miller Whitehead (his initials and comments on old mounts); Charles Brinsley Marlay (1831 – 1912); his bequest, 1912.
