PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, ii modern paper flyleaves + ii modern parchment flyleaves + 81 fols. + ii modern parchment flyleaves + i modern paper flyleaf, 177 x 122 (116 x 78) mm, 21 long lines, ruled in pink ink.

BINDING: nineteenth century, blind-stamped brown leather over pasteboard, central panel with apes supporting scrolls inscribed Sit nomen domini benedictum, two clasps on lower cover, two catchplates on upper cover, edges gilt, yellow silk bookmark, by Leon Gruel (name lettered on lower spine)

CONTENTS: fols. 1r – 6v Calendar; fols. 7r – 9v Gospel Sequences; fols. 11r – 13v Hours of the Cross; fols. 15r – 17r Hours of the Holy Spirit; fols. 17v – 18r Ave Maria in Middle Dutch (addition); fols. 19r –21v Mass of the Virgin; fols. 22r –23r Obsecro te; fols. 23v – 24r O intemerata; fols. 24v –27v Suffrages; fols. 29r – 53v Hours of the Virgin; fols. 55r – 61r Penitential Psalms; fols. 61r – 64v Litany with collects; fols. 66r – 78v Office of the Dead; fol. 79r-v Notices on Indulgences of Urban IV in Middle Dutch and Latin (additon); fols. 79v – 81v Prayers (addition).

DECORATION: Six full-page framed miniatures with full acanthus and floral borders on plain parchment grounds:
fol. 10v Hours of the Cross, Pentecost; fol. 14v Hours of the Holy Spirit, Crucifixion, with Virgin supported by St John and Holy Woman, and soldiers; fol. 18v Mass of the Virgin, Virgin and Child enthroned between two adoring angels; fol. 28v Hours of the Virgin, Matins, Annunciation; fol. 54v Penitential Psalms, David penitent, with pigeon-house in background; fol. 65v Office of the Dead, Raising of Lazarus.

Thirteen small miniatures with one-sided gold, blue and pink bars, and three-sided acanthus and floral borders on plain parchment grounds:
fol. 7r Gospel sequences, St John on Patmos, eagle with scroll; fol. 7v St Luke writing at desk, winged ox beside him; fol. 8v St Matthew writing at desk, angel holding inkpot; fol. 9v St Mark writing at desk, lion before him; fol. 22r Obsecro te, Pietà with St John; fol. 23v O intemerata, St John blessing chalice with serpent; fol. 24v Suffrages, Holy Trinity holding orb and adored by angels; fol. 25r St John the Baptist blessing, lamb before him; fol. 25v St Peter holding book and key; fol. 26r St Dympna holding book; fol. 26v St Barbara holding book and palm branch, tower behind her; fol. 27r St Margaret holding cross and emerging from dragon; fol. 27v St Anne, Virgin holding swaddled Christ Child and angel holding open book.

ORNAMENTATION: Red or blue white-patterned initials [6 ll.] with foliate infill on gold grounds, one-sided gold, blue and pink bars, and three-sided acanthus and floral borders on plain parchment grounds; gold initials [2 – 3 ll.] on red and blue white-patterned grounds with floral spraywork extensions; alternate gold and blue one-line initials with black and red pen-flourished infill; capitals highlighted in red; gold and blue geometric line-fillers.
