Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, i parchment flyleaf (former pastedown, fragment from tenth-century Missal containing Offices for Sundays after Pentecost) + 144 fols. + i parchment flyleaf (former pastedown, fragment from tenth-century Missal containing Offices for Sundays after Pentecost with neumes), 325 x 265 (470 x 192) mm, 2 columns, 30 lines, ruled in hard point, quire marks.

BINDING: fifteenth century, alumn tawed pigskin over wooden boards, sewn on three double supports, blind-stamped central panel with two roll stamps, one consisting of foliage, the other of figures and shields, forming nine parallel bands, remains of two leather straps on lower cover, traces of two catchplates on upper cover.

CONTENTS: fols. 2r – 144v Priscian, Institutiones grammaticae, with marginal and interlinear glosses (ends imperfectly).

ORNAMENTATION: Interlaced initials [4 – 12 ll.] in brown ink, occasionally coloured in red, green, and purple (fols. 2r, 3r, 77v, 113v, 119v, 129r, 136v); brown ink initials [2 – 4 ll.] with occasional interlaced or coloured infill; display script in Rustic capitals.

Notes

History note: Probably made for – and at – the Benedictine monastery of St Maximin, Trier, after it was rebuilt in 942 – 952; still there in the seventeenth century (ex-libris and ‘N. 83’ on fol. 2r) and probably until the abbey’s secularisation in 1802; purchased in 1902 from Emil Hirsch, Munich (Catalogus librororm manuscriptorum e Bibliotheca G(orres)isana, no. 39) by Frank McClean (1837 – 1904); his bequest, 1904.
