Upper surface: carved decoration covered with brown glaze comprises a frieze of calligraphy and split palmettes, framed by bands on the upper and lower edges.
Underside: remnants of plaster visible in small areas, otherwise undecorated

Similar friezes are in the Dar al-Batha Museum, the Madrash al Bu'naniyah, Madrash Bin Yusuf and Madrash al'Attarin all in Fez; the Jami'Sidi Bin Nasr in Tetuan; the adrash Abul Hasan al-Marini in Sale; the Dar al-Glawi in Marrakesh; the Dar al-Qasbah Museum in Tangiers. A tile from Sale is in the Louvre. A frieze in situ is at the Mausoleum of the Sultans of the Sa'adian Dynasty, Marrakesh. The inscription on this group of tiles is not the same as that on the Fitzwilliam's, which appears to have one or more tiles missing.
