Description

Earthenware decorated with coloured with glazes that are separated by black slip, gilded

Calcareous earthenware, mould made, with designs outlined in black slip and coloured with white, blue and turquoise pitted glaze, with small areas of gilding.
Shape: double lozenge with straight edges
Upper surface: colours are separated by a thin black line of slip. A turquoise border frames a palmette arabesque with pendant buds, all painted in white and turquoise on a blue background. Elements of the white palmettes are also gilded.
Underside: undecorated, uneven with plaster adhered.

History note: H.S. Reitlinger (d.1950); the Reitlinger Trust, Maidenhead, from which transferred in 1991.
