Description

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Parchment, 432 x 402 mm, collage made up of initial (317 x 290 mm) and eight border fragments, pasted on cardboard.

CONTENTS: The initial M would have introduced Psalm 131, Memento domine David, the first psalm for Thursday Vespers.

DECORATION: Historiated initial formed of stylized acanthus and pearls, surrounded by foliage, grotesques and putti on gold ground, and enclosed within composite floral and acanthus borders containing birds, animals, grotesques, the arms of Castile and Aragon and the devices of Ferdinand and Isabella, the yoke and the bundle of arrows respectively: Ps. 131, [M, 7 ll.] Personification of Justice as a crowned maiden, enthroned, holding gold coins on her lap and scroll inscribed Reddo unicuique secundum opera sua, and surrounded by seven crowned maidens holding heaps of gold coins and scrolls inscribed with garbled verses from Ps. 135 and 136, inscription alongside frame, IVSTITIA EST SINGVLARUM RERVM E[T] PERSONARVM EQVISSIMA DISTRIBVTIO QVAM QVIS OBTINENS E FIADHEREI (sic).

Notes

History note: Royal monastery of St Thomas in Avila, Spain; Rev. E.S. Dewick (1844–1917); purchased from his son, Rev. E.C. Dewick, and presented by the Friends of the Fitzwilliam Museum in 1918.
